About Mary Ellen Hill
I am Mary Hill, and I am running for Suffolk City Council, Chuckatuck Borough, as an independent candidate. As a disabled veteran, a local small business founder, and a state-appointed environmental justice advisory council commissioner, my life is defined by duty, executive leadership, and service. More importantly, I am a proud seventh-generation daughter of the watermen, oyster harvesters, and farmers of Suffolk, formerly Nansemond County. I reside in the historic family home built by my parents' own hands in 1937. I made history as the first African American woman to resurrect our family's seven-generation maritime industry, passing it down through our sustainable apprenticeship program. When I look back at everything our families have survived on this land, I know how good God has been. I bring ancestral longevity to care for our heritage and business maturity to execute solutions, serving as a shield for the Chuckatuck-Oakland Civic League and our citizens.
