About Meron T. Yohannes
Meron has dedicated her career to public service, currently serving as Vice Chair of the Herndon Planning Commission since 2025, having joined the commission in 2020. Her proudest achievement to date is championing the Transit-Related Area Growth Plan, which established a roadmap for sustainable, mixed-use development around the Herndon Metro station. Meron served as a politically appointed Senior Policy Advisor for the U.S. Department of Commerce under the Biden-Harris Administration. In this role, she managed a nearly $3 billion economic development portfolio, overseeing initiatives focused on workforce training, community revitalization, technology innovation, and disaster relief. Her work prioritized supporting minority-owned businesses and advancing economic equity. Before joining the federal government, she was a Policy Analyst at the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC) in Washington, D.C., where she developed recommendations for Members of Congress on affordable housing, water infrastructure, evidence-based policymaking, and the future of the AI-driven workforce. Meron's connection to Herndon runs deep; she has only left her hometown to pursue her education, earning a Bachelor's in Political Science (2016) and a Master's in Public Administration (2018) from Virginia Commonwealth University. As a graduate research assistant, she worked on root causes of poverty, social work burnout, and the dynamics between the police and communities. As a first-generation American and college graduate, she is proud to bring her experience in policy, planning, and community advocacy to serve the town that shaped her.
