About Amy D. Turner

I have dedicated my career to education, leadership, and service for nearly 20 years. Since beginning my career in education in 2006, I have worked as a teacher, coach, and school administrator, helping students reach their full potential both in and out of the classroom. I spent 14 years in public education as a special education teacher, advocating for students with diverse learning needs and partnering with families to support student success. During my time in public schools, I also coached volleyball and softball, earning Coach of the Year honors in both sports for my commitment to developing student-athletes and building successful programs. For the past six and a half years, I have served with the Virginia Department of Corrections, where I have worked as a special education teacher, assistant principal, and my current role, principal. In these roles, I have overseen educational programs that provide academic and workforce training opportunities, helping individuals gain the skills needed to improve their lives and contribute positively to their communities. I am currently completing the final year of my Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Leadership through the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Education. My studies focus on leadership, organizational improvement, and educational excellence. Throughout my career, I have received numerous recognitions, including being named Teacher of the Year at Southampton High School, a Christie Award nominee at Varina High School, Employee of the Year at Deerfield Correctional Center, and MVP of the Virginia Department of Corrections Unit Heads Leadership Conference Committee. I am an active member of Courtland Methodist Church and remain committed to serving my community through education, leadership, and volunteerism. I reside in Courtland with my husband, Josh, who is also a teacher and coach, and our dog, Buc. We are fortunate to have many nieces and nephews, both by blood and by love, who are an important part of our lives. Education also runs deep in my family. I come from a long line of educators, including my grandmother, mother, aunts, uncle, and cousin. Their dedication to education and service has helped shape my own commitment to students, schools, and the community.
